40TH KOBINE FESTIVAL OF THE CHIEFS AND PEOPLE OF THE LAWRA TRADITIONAL AREA IN THE UPPER WEST REGION
Mobile Telecommunication giant, MTN, on Thursday 13th October, 2016 presented a cheque of GH¢ 5,000.00 to the chiefs and people of the Lawra Traditional Area in support of the ‘Kobine Festival’.
Apart from the amount, the multinational company also gave airtime and some hampers consisting of drinks worth GH¢ 500.00 each as well as assorted MTN Souvenirs to add colour to the occasion.
It is also supported the organisation of a durbar to climax the ‘Kobine Festival’ celebration which took place on Friday 14/10/2016 at Lawra in addition to other activities such as the MTN inter-community football Gala and cycling competitions as well as musical concert and street jam.
Mr. James Basintale Bukari, General Manager, Sales and Distribution, MTN Northern Business District, presented the cheque and the items to Naa Puowele Karbo III, Paramount Chief of the Lawra Traditional Area and said the company remained committed to the promotion of the rich Ghanaian heritage through festivals.
He said MTN was particularly excited about the aspect of this year’s celebration which was aimed at celebrating agriculture and farmers across the district.
Naa Karbo thanked MTN for its continued support for the celebration of the festival and appealed to his people to remain loyal to the company by patronizing its products and services.
Delivering a speech read on behalf of H. E. President John Dramani Mahama, the Upper West Regional Minister, Ing. Amin Amidu Sulemani said as a nation, we continue to count our blessings and with hard work and the right investment we can turn round our economy and boost agricultural production.
The Hon. Regional Minister was speaking on the theme “Kobine Festival an Instrument for Socio- Cultural and Economic Empowerment of the Youth for Development”.
Responding to a request by the overlord of the Lawra traditional area on the nature of the roads in the region, Ing. Amin Sulemani said tarring of the Nadowli -Lawra- Hamile road has received considerable attention and was certain that come early next year 2017, the Lawra -Hamile stretch will be completed.
In the area of education, he said there has been a massive infrastructural improvement at the basic level. The secondary level has witnessed similar works as the district is a beneficiary of 200 Community Day Schools whose construction is ongoing throughout the country.
Ing. Amidu Sulemani also said the government is making huge investments in the provision of water and the extension of electricity to several communities in the region under the SHEP project. The region has one of the highest coverage of 76% of potable water supply in the country whilst every effort is being made to ensure that every community is hooked on to the national grid by the end of 2017.
In less than two months, the country will be heading to the polls to elect a presidential and parliamentarians for another term of office and the survival of our dear country supersedes the ambitions of any individual or group that is the reason why I have demonstrated my commitment to conducting a peaceful election he added.
